Communication and preparing for the journey

Before travelling abroad, check that roaming services for calls, SMS and mobile data are correctly activated with your mobile operator. If you use a prepaid SIM card, also check that you have enough credit.

In the EU, the EEA, Ukraine and Moldova the Roam Like at Home rule applies, so you usually communicate on similar terms as at home. Outside the Roam Like at Home area, the prices of roaming calls and especially mobile data can be significantly higher. We therefore always recommend checking your operator’s roaming price list before you travel, or considering a local SIM or a travel eSIM.

At your destination you can buy a local prepaid SIM card or a travel eSIM. If you change your phone number during the engagement, inform the agency immediately.

eSIM and mobile data abroad

For a quick mobile data connection abroad you can use a travel eSIM. Offers and prices differ according to the destination country, the length of your stay and the amount of data, so we recommend comparing several providers before buying.

Please note: most travel eSIMs provide mainly or only mobile data and do not assign a regular telephone number for ordinary calls and SMS. You can therefore keep your original SIM card active for your phone number and use the eSIM for mobile data. For calls over the internet you can use, for example, WhatsApp, Telegram or other communication apps.

Before buying, check whether your mobile phone supports eSIM, whether it is locked to a particular operator, and what mobile networks and terms the chosen plan offers in the destination country.

Fully charge your mobile phone before you leave and save battery during the journey. For a longer trip we recommend taking a power bank and a charging cable and keeping them easily accessible during the journey. Arrival, pick-up or other organisational instructions may be given by phone. If you can, top up your phone at the station, the airport, a restaurant or a café.

Also check the type of electrical sockets and the voltage in the destination country and, if necessary, prepare a suitable adapter.

We recommend having navigation and transport apps installed and updated, for example Google Maps, Waze, Uber or Bolt. An active payment card, or possibly a virtual card, is also practical. Take a small amount of cash with you as well, roughly EUR 50 to 100, because it is not possible to pay by card everywhere. Also make sure you know all the necessary PINs, passwords and login details.

Underestimating these precautions can make your journey considerably more difficult.
